In this light, Chapelboro has decided to publish the submission as-is to reflect the authors thoughts on a then-unresolved situation)
Am I reading this correctly? There are people walking around seriously suggesting Hubert Davis should go? Art Chansky’s column on March 22 just blows me away. Could there be a stupider move by the administration than to fire HD? Obviously, they are not considering “Then what?” Here’s how it will go: we’ll find someone who walks on water, give him 3 years to do the exact same thing HD is doing now; wrestling with NIL and The Portal to put a competitive team on the court. Someone explain to me how things would be different. If Michael Jordan himself wanted the job, he’d have no less pressure or advantage to do better than HD is doing now.
Plus, if you wanted to be fair, compare the W/L records of Coach Smith’s first 5 years and Coach Davis’s first 5 years; I know, that was then and this is now. Nevertheless…
Coach Smith: 66-47, 58% never heard of Chapel Hill until the assistant position w/ coach McGuire opened up. Burned in effigy, survived a huge effort to replace him. The rest is history.
Coach Davis: 125-54, 71% Played 4 years as star player at UNC, 8 years as assistant coach for Coach Williams. Final Four. 2024 ACC Coach of the Year. Beat Duke at home.
Do you really think you can get better than Coach HD? The season-ending flame-out with Caleb Wilson’s thumb notwithstanding, do you honestly think things will improve? Never mind whether it’s fair or not, or by firing HD you send a message to any and every coach that might want the job that you’re going to have a knife at your throat the whole time. That message is either going to cost you in higher salaries or make it harder to find the next John Calipari, or Bill Self, or Coach Smith.
So, let’s sum it up; we have a new AD coming in with no AD experience.
We’re scouting for a new location for the Smith Center, apparently unable to decide on a new place or fix the old one. (that’s a whole discussion in-and-of itself.)
We’ve got a football program that is the laughing stock of Div. 1 football…
Yessir, let’s complicate matters by firing a winning, respected head basketball coach that has earned the right to be given time to fix things and get better. Yeah boy, let’s fire the guy we got now, the guy we know, the guy whose blood runs Carolina Blue, and find someone who really, really, wants an ulcer and has no idea what he’s walking into. Nor cares anywhere near as much as Coach Davis does. Believe me, he knows what needs to be done and he needs an opportunity to it. No one is beating him up more than himself. It’s inconceivable to me that the UNC culture has degenerated into the kind of institution that demands the quick and now. We didn’t used to be that way…
