Expected Roster Moves: Carlson and Kingery

Today, Chicago Cubs Craig Counsell confirmed what it was looking like from the outside after the other maneuvers this week: outfielder Dylan Carlson and utility man Scott Kingery are projected to make the Opening Day roster.

Talking to Craig Counsell, he said Dylan Carlson made the team and Scott Kingery “will be on the plane,” which means most likely he’s on OD roster. Seiya Suzuki will travel to Chicago as well as they determine his timeline.

I say “projected” and – I suspect – Counsell says “on the plane” for Kingery because the Cubs are likely still scouring the waiver wire and minor league opt-outs to see if a better infield bench option pops up this week (meaning no offense to Kingery, who can play all over and had his best season at Triple-A last year in quite some time). If not, then Kingery makes the team.

If and when Seiya Suzuki returns from the IL, though, someone would have to be bounced, and that may well be Kingery when all is said and done.

In the meantime, as non-roster invitees, both Carlson and Kingery would need 40-man roster spots by Opening Day. Those could come by way of DFAs, or could come via players going on the 60-day IL (Tyler Austin? Justin Steele?).

    More soon.
