Just days after former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at Sunrisers Leeds for singing Pakistan star Abrar Ahmed in The Hundred auction, he has defended himself after facing backlash over appearing on a Pakistan show during Champions Trophy 2025. The ex-India opener appeared on a Pakistan TV show titled the ‘Dressing Room’ alongside Pakistan legends like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis during the marquee tournament last year. However, Gavaskar found himself embroiled in controversy, with several fans accusing him of hypocrisy, especially after he publically lashed out at SRH owner Kavya Maran for signing Abrar recently.
‘Did not ask nor got paid’
Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Gavaskar admitted that while he has been on commentary panels of the ICC and the ACC, the revenue went to all the participating countries and not from an Indian entity. He said that he cannot be labelled as a contributor as he was not making any payment to a commentator from either India or an another nationality.
“I did not ask nor get paid for the show I did in Dubai. Yes, I have been on commentary panels of ICC and ACC. The revenue went to all the participating countries from the ICC and ACC, but not from an Indian entity as far as I know. I don’t understand how you can say that I am a contributor since I am not making any payment to any commentator, Indian or any other nationality,” Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar had claimed that Sunrisers and Maran will be responsible for Indian casualties going forward. The money they’ll pay to Abrar will directly go to the Pakistani government via tax, which will then be used to buy weapons that result in the death of Indians. Gavaskar once again reiterated his stance and reckoned that Indians should stop playing Pakistanis in any league across the globe.
“I don’t follow the CPL, ILT20, or SA20, so I am not aware who is playing for whom. Yes. If there are Indian owners and they are paying Pakistani players, then hopefully they will stop doing that. I don’t know about other sports and what they are doing. All I am praying for is that Indians stop paying Pakistanis. If you have noticed, the reverse has never happened for decades, if ever,” Gavaskar stated.
