The city of Elgin fired a police officer for violating department policies after he posted on social media suggesting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection conduct enforcement actions in the Elgin area.
According to a news release from the city, an independent investigation found Officer Jason Lentz violated departmental policies and standard operating procedures when he made the posts in October 2025.
Lentz was placed on leave the day after Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley was made aware of the posts, the release said, and the city “immediately” began an independent investigation.
s suggested the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection conduct enforcement actions at three locations in Elgin and surrounding communities and tagged those agencies.
Investigators determined the actions violated departmental policies. The City of Elgin Civilian Review Board also recommended termination after reviewing the investigative report.
Lenz was the subject of an investigation twelve years prior, when in 2014, he created a Facebook page, saying the Ferguson, Mo., police officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown “did society a favor,” NBC Chicago previously reported.
In a statement expressing support for Lalley’s decision to terminate Lenz, City Manager Rick Kozal said he was among those who demanded Lentz’s firing in 2014 for the previous misconduct. In that situation, an arbitrator overturned the city’s decision to fire Lentz and imposed a six-month suspension instead.
According to the city, Lentz applied for a disability pension on Oct. 16, 2025; he had been working in a light-duty assignment following a 2023 on-duty injury.
His application was approved on Feb. 24, with city officials noting the board’s determinations are separate from the disciplinary process.
