News10NBC reporter Adelisa Badzic was in the area all day where the shooting happened at the intersection of Lake and Driving Park avenues. The owners of a convenience store directly across from the shooting were inside and quickly locked their doors so the shooter couldn’t get inside.
One of the store owners described what he witnessed.
“I see a cop car pull up to the bus stop and I zoomed in on my camera and I see the cop get out and he’s walking towards the people at the bus stop. I know them. They’re everyday customers and when I zoomed in I saw the cop approach the guy,” said Mohammad Nawas, owner of We R Convenience.
“I didn’t see his face or anything. I don’t know who he was but he just turned around and let off three shots and one of them hit his leg and then I went outside. I ran to the door to lock it and then I saw the guy run that way so then I went outside to go check on the cop,” he also said.
The store owner said there were no customers inside at the time, just him and another worker. He also said shootings in the area are not uncommon, noting that Lake Avenue can get a bit crazy.
His main concern was keeping the shooter out of the store. Badzic also tried knocking on some doors to see if anyone living in the area saw or heard anything, but no one answered.
