Former prison guard pleads guilty in connection to beating death of inmate Robert Brooks

UTICA, N.Y. — A former prison guard at Marcy Correctional Facility has pleaded guilty in connection to the beating death of inmate and Greece native Robert Brooks.

Robert Kessler entered his plea in Oneida County Court Thursday, News10NBC’s affiliate in Utica reports. He pleaded guilty to gang assault as part of a deal for his testimony.

Kessler testified in the murder trials of his former colleagues David Kingsley, Nicholas Kieffer and Mathew Galliher.

A jury found Kingsley guilty of murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Kieffer and Galliher were acquitted of all charges in Brooks’ death.

In January, Kieffer sued the state for $5 million as he claims his arrest was “maliciously made” and alleged the trial furthered the political agenda of the governor and state attorney general.
