As one of the most famous and universally iconic directors of the modern age, Steven Spielberg has tackled almost every genre within the world of cinema, expertly exploring everything action, horror and fantasy to science fiction, romance and sweeping historical dramas.
One genre he has never yet managed to properly wade into, however, is the traditional Western narrative: a feat the 79-year-old might soon accomplish with his next tentative project.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Spielberg has shed some light on his plans for his next movie following the release of Disclosure Day later this summer.
"Well, I'm developing a Western," Spielberg said at the recent SXSW, culminating in appreciative applause from the audience in attendance.
While Spielberg mentioned that the planned movie would have many of the common conventions of traditional cinematic Western, it would also avoid many of the more controversial elements associated with the genre, such as harmful tropes related to race and gender.
"It's gonna have horses. There will be guns," Spielberg said. "But there'll be no tropes, I can just tell you that. There are gonna be no stereotypes, no tropes."
Since his career began, Spielberg has long expressed his admiration for the Western genre, naming prominent Western director John Ford as one of his key creative influences and referring to Stagecoach and The Searchers as two of his personal favorite movies.
"He inspires me, and I'm very sensitive to the way he uses his camera to paint his pictures, and the way he frames things," Spielberg once said of Ford at the AFI. "I really admire Stagecoach because, for one thing, it was John Ford's first foray into Monument Valley, so he was starting to use landscape art to help tell his story."
Despite his love for the genre, however, Spielberg has yet to fully tackle a self-contained Western, an achievement that he's had his eyes set on for several years.
"I was asked that question over the last 40 years of my career, if not longer, and I always say, ‘A musical is the one thing I haven’t done.’ The thing I neglected to say is the one genre I haven’t really tackled yet is the Western," Spielberg said. "So who knows? Maybe I’ll be putting on spurs someday."
