Major League Baseball Joins the Prediction Market Game

It’s hard for me to imagine too many of you are unfamiliar with prediction markets at this point, given the marketing blitz of players like Polymarket and Kalshi. But for those of you who aren’t aware, these markets – which contend they are not gambling, and involve the creation of futures contracts for users to not-bet against each other, and the broader market as a whole, on all kinds of specific things like sports, politics, entertainment, world events, etc. – are blowing up more and more every month. They are quickly becoming entrenched in the same way that daily fantasy sports did a decade ago, and then legalized sports betting thereafter.

And, much as was the case with daily fantasy and sports betting, you’re going to see leagues get into the business both for the cash and for the protection of their IP.

    Thus:

SCOOP: MLB is getting into the prediction-market business through a multi-year deal with Polymarket.Polymarket will be the exclusive prediction-market partner of MLB and will be the only platform allowed to use team logos and marks, sources tell @FOS. t.co/iDOfN7KJZ5

NEWS: MLB is taking a big step into the prediction-market space, signing a deal with Polymarket and also reaching a formal agreement with the CFTC to share information. “It is really important not to be chasing developments,” Rob Manfred said. t.co/JWvbseJbAv

In a statement shared by CNBC, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred aimed for the integrity angle:

“Protecting the integrity of the game on the field is our top priority,” MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said. “By engaging in this community, we are able to work together to create clear boundaries with the goal of mitigating risk while providing fan engagement opportunities.”

In other words, if MLB doesn’t have a formalized relationship for managing/tracking these markets, there are risks to the integrity of the sport. That’s how, they would argue, MLB was able to catch players who were (allegedly) intentionally throwing waste pitches for betting purposes.

That said, we can’t be naive to think there isn’t also a massive financial incentive for leagues to get into bed with these increasingly enormous markets. Now we wait to see what it actually looks like on the field and on broadcasts.
