23-year-old Forrester ripped a lifetime best of 4:28.39 as the sole swimmer of the field to delve under the 4:30 barrier, overtaking the longstanding Aussie, Oceanian and All Comers Record in the process.
That former standard rested at the 4:28.72 Ellen Fullerton put on the books during the supersuited era of 2009.
Entering this competition, Forrester’s career-swiftest performance in the SCM 400 IM stood at the 4:37.94 she registered at the 2024 edition of these championships. That means the World Championships silver medalist hacked nearly 10 seconds off her previous PB to stand atop the podium tonight in Sydney.
Her time here also cleared the 4:32.20 Swimming Australia-mandated selection standard needed to qualify for this year’s Short Course World Championships headed to Beijing, China in December. Forrester’s 4:28.39 effort would have garnered a 5th-place finish at the 2024 SC Worlds.
The St. Peters Western athlete was joined by Amelie Smith in Beijing qualification, with Smith snagging silver in 4:30.87. Kayla Hardy rounded out tonight’s podium in 4:32.79.
Of note, Forrester’s swim came after she already earned silver in the 200m backstroke behind Iona Anderson earlier in the session.

Forrester’s resume continues to improve in this grueling event, with the ace having earned World Championshps bronze in 2023 and silver last year. More recently, she claimed gold at this year’s Commonwealth Games and silver at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships.
On this evening’s performance, Forrester told Swimming Australia, “That was a shock. I came here with no expectations, just to jump in and have a bit of fun.
“I haven’t done a lot of short course and that hurt doubling up (with the 200m backstroke) but I’ve done a lot of double-ups, especially internationally.
“I’ve always wanted to represent Australia at (World) Short Course, hopefully this year is my year.”
