Alabama softball takes top 10 series win against Arkansas

No. 4 Alabama defeated No. 8 Arkansas in its second SEC series of the season this weekend. Alabama is now 2-0 in SEC series so far, after sweeping Ole Miss earlier in the season.

Game 1

Alabama kicked off its series against Arkansas on Friday with a 4-1 win, the Crimson Tide’s first home SEC win.

Both teams made it to the fifth inning scoreless. Arkansas ended its scoreless streak, putting its one and only run on the board with a sac fly.

Alabama followed suit in the bottom of the fifth, putting up three runs after hitting catcher Alexis Pupillo laced a double into the gap with the bases loaded, advancing Alabama to 3-1. Outfielder Lauren Johnson finished up the scoring with a sac fly in the sixth bringing home outfielder Kristen White.

Junior pitcher Jocelyn Briski pitched the entirety of the game and struck out 14, a tie for her career best, set previously this season against St Thomas.

“It was a great first home SEC win, and you’ve got to give it up to Jocelyn Briski,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “That was one hell of a pitching performance. Fourteen strikeouts against one of the best lineups in the country.”

This win advances the Crimson Tide’s opening streak to 25-0, which is tied for fourth best in program history with the 2007 team.

    Game 2

Arkansas came back for vengeance in Game 2 on Saturday, securing a 14-9 win. This is the most an opponent has been able to put up against the Crimson Tide so far this season.

Unlike the day before, Arkansas got off to a fast start and got on the board in the first inning after a throwing error from Alabama. The Razorbacks also added another run to their tally in the first with an RBI, while Alabama remained runless.

In the second, Alabama fought to catch up and managed to put its first run on the board with an RBI single from infielder Mari Hubbard. Infielder Jena Young then tied the game 2-2 with her own RBI single.

Arkansas came back in the third with a two-run double, while keeping Alabama off the board, advancing to 4-2.

The Razorbacks came out of the fourth inning 6-2 after a single brought in two. Down four runs, Alabama went into the bottom of the fourth with a lot to make up. Outfielder Ana Roman scored first on an RBI fielder’s choice. Three more followed suit to end the fourth inning with Alabama in the lead 7-6.

Arkansas quickly closed the gap with a home-run in the fifth inning to tie the game 7-7. The Crimson Tide went runless the entire fifth and sixth inning, unlike the Razorbacks. By the seventh inning, Arkansas had increased its lead to 14-7.

Alabama didn’t go out without a fight, though, adding two more runs to its tally in the seventh inning with an RBI groundout from Pupillo and another from catcher Marlie Giles, ending the game 14-9.

“It was an ugly and uncharacteristic start. Too many runs were given up, but they went up two and we came back and tie it. They went up four and we come back to take the lead,” Murphy said. “We battled through it but couldn’t take the win. I always say that championship Sunday is about who can adjust the quickest and take the series. That’s what tomorrow will be about.”

    Game 3

Alabama seemingly regained its footing on Sunday and secured the series after defeating Arkansas 4-1 in the final game.

Much like the series opener, the first inning went runless for both teams. Alabama put the first run on the board in the second with an RBI single from Giles to bring in infielder Salen Hawkins.

The Crimson Tide put two more runs on the board in the fourth and fifth before the Razorbacks secured their first run in the sixth with a home run. Infielder Ambrey Taylor put up Alabama’s final run in the sixth with a pinch hit home-run to bring the score to 4-1.

“Secondly, I think we bounced back in a big way from yesterday. [Saturday] was uncharacteristic of us, but it’s going to happen,” Murphy said. “We play a very long season. I thought the fight, grit and determination came a long way from yesterday.”
