As Invincible season 4 is scaling up the stakes with the Viltrumite War saga, as it did in the original comics, all eyes have been on Thragg — who is set to even make the juggernaut that was season 3’s Conquest look like a street thug by comparison.
The Viltrum Empire’s leader, as Grand Regent, Thragg is regarded as the most powerful Viltrumite of all at the time in the comics, and is just as ruthless as his great strength would have you believe.
We were recently given the same level of warning from the creator of Invincible himself: Robert Kirkman, who is co-showrunner and executive producer on the series adaptation.
In a recent interview ahead of season 4, Kirkman, along with fellow co-showrunner and executive producer Simon Racioppa, told Radio Times exactly what makes Thragg a different kind of threat to what Mark has faced so far, along with learning more about the Viltrumites themselves.
"As far as Thragg, I mean, he's almost elemental in how powerful he is, you know, and he's a threat that far exceeds even Conquest and anything that that Mark has faced", said Kirkman.
"With him, and with his introduction here, we're going to find out so much more about the Viltramites and their society and everything that you know makes them tick, that I think that people are going to have a better awareness of what the stakes are and how this universe works, and just, it's a really exciting season for a myriad of different reasons."
View Green Video on the source websiteAs Nolan says during the recent season 4 teaser trailer for the character: "However strong you think you are, Thragg is stronger". We won’t spoil what we events from we expect from the comics to see in season 4, but we'll at least note that even Conquest — the most violent and terrifyingly brutal Viltrumite Mark has fought so far at the time — was deeply afraid of him.
Racioppa added to Kirkman’s points, laying out how daunting seeing Thragg and the rest of his Viltrumites show up will be compared to what’s come before: "I mean, up to now, we've seen the threat one Viltrumite causes, right, either Anissa, or Nolan, or Conquest. So now, imagine the rest of them showing up, led by possibly the most powerful, most trained, most perfect Viltrumite of them all."
"So we've teased it for a long time. We figured maybe now it's about time you met the rest of the family, you know."
As Nolan pointed out to Allen in season 3, after they broke out of prison, there are fewer than 50 pure-blooded Viltrumites left. Be that as it may, even only having that many turned against the Earth can mean certain doom if Mark, Nolan, and co aren’t prepared.
For context, season 3’s Invincible War unleashed twenty evil versions of Mark upon the planet. Sure, twelve of them were defeated and killed, but at the cost of many destroyed cities and countless casualties — including heroes like Rex Splode. If it weren’t for Angstrom Levy trapping the remaining eight in another dimension as they were about to betray him, the Invincibles left would have surely been enough to take over the planet.
Compared to those evil Invincible Mark Graysons, who are still powerful but are only around 19-years-old at the time, Thragg alone would likely wipe the floor with them — at least the eight who were left.
Throw in the roughly three dozen Viltrumites he’s capable of bringing with him, all with thousands of years of training and experience, and the Mark Grayson of this show’s Invincible universe will be pushed far beyond the brink of what he thought was possible.
Invincible season 4 will be made available to stream on Amazon Prime from Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
