Spurred by weather conditions and a partial government shutdown, major disruptions persisted at airports across the nation on Monday, including in Chicago.
Timelapse video captured long lines of travelers stretching throughout O’Hare International Airport.
You could read the story on the flight boards and on the faces of some passengers.
“Worked a 12-hour night shift, slept for two hours,” one traveler said. “Had to get to the airport super early to make this line. We are feeling a little tired and delirious, but we are going to make our flight.”
The line to get into the security screening area ran half the length of Terminal 1 at times.
For travelers, it was a perfect storm of challenges – first, the snow and high winds from overnight; second, a ground stop; and third, decreased staffing at the Transportation Security Administration amid the partial shutdown.
The TSA estimates as many as 10% of employees called out yesterday as the shutdown lingers, and workers are not getting paid.
The situation actually improved from overnight, when Carole Cantore Dotson first tried to leave O’Hare. She then went to Midway and was making plans to either fly or rent a car and drive back to Atlanta.
“They did say there are no flights today,” Cantore Dotson said. “All of the flights out of O’Hare would have been standby, but it was standby all day. They couldn’t guarantee us a ticket until six o’clock on Tuesday.”
Back at O’Hare, United employees did what they could to keep lines moving and travelers happy.
The best advice – come early and be prepared to wait.
Traveler Terry Rushing was on his way to Cameroon.
“We have traveled enough that I like to have time to spare…” Rushing said. “Generally, when we travel internationally, I try to set aside four hours before departure time, and I have never been sorry that I planned ahead.”
