‘80s Heavy Metal Icon Details ‘Insane’ Accident That Left Him ‘Barely Walking’

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian is opening up about an unforgettable experience he had during the band’s performance on the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise.

The heavy metal band kicked off the year with a high-energy show as they participated in the cruise scheduled from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2.

The five-day event was considered the world's biggest heavy metal cruise, sailing from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas aboard the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

However, while heavy metal fans celebrated the event, Scott Ian was dealing with a serious health scare.

In an interview with Australia’s independent music web platform Heavy Magazine, as reported by Metal Injection, the guitarist injured his back during the second day of the performance.

At the time, they were experiencing extreme weather due to a “bad storm” near South Florida and the Bahamas.

For their safety, the cruise “stayed off the coast of Florida” for about 20 or 30 miles offshore.

“Miami, Florida, that time of year should be 70, 75 degrees Fahrenheit and it was in the 30s, it was snowing weather,” he shared, adding, “And we're out on the ocean, and the winds are blowing 40 miles per hour. And the second show we do on the boat on Saturday night, you do it on the big pool deck.”

According to him, the band had to play outdoors despite the freezing weather, which made the performance physically difficult.

However, they chose to continue the show because about 3,000 fans showed up and they did not want to disappoint them.

“So we played,” he continued. “And we are very physical performers. I move around quite a bit on stage, jumping, stomping; I'm all over the place. And there was no way for my muscles — even though I warmed up, my muscles never warmed up. And by the end of the next day, after playing that show in the cold, my back went out, and I could barely walk for a week, probably. I couldn't tie my shoes. I couldn't fucking put pants on. I never had pain like that, back spasms like this. It was insane."

Unfortunately for the Anthrax guitarist, he had to manage the back injury while the band continued with the show in South America, followed by a tour with Megadeth and Exodus across Canada.

"I was flying these 10-hour flights and I couldn't even move, dude," he revealed, calling the experience “agony.”

As they say, the show must go on. At the time, he was pushing through the back-to-back tour with ongoing treatment despite performing at only around “40 percent” of his normal ability.

"Every night on the tour seeing massage therapists, seeing f—g osteopaths, anything to get me through the show every night," he shared.

Following this, Scott Ian revealed that he is recovering and improving through continued physical therapy and hopes he will be much closer to full strength before their Australian tour from March 23 to 28.
