Bregman, who was serving as the Cubs’ designated hitter in Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals, made it a night to remember as he clobbered three home runs in a blowout victory in the nation’s capital.
Bregman completed the three-peat in the eighth inning when he launched a three-run home run into the left field bullpen at Nationals Park, giving himself seven RBI’s in the game.
Not only was the game the first three-home run contest of Bregman’s MLB career, but he also made some Cubs history in the game.
According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, Bregman is the 20th MLB player since 1900 that has had three home runs and multiple walks in the same game, and his performance Wednesday made him the first Cubs player to ever achieve that feat.
Bregman also became one of 29 players in Cubs history to hit three home runs in the same game according to Baseball Reference’s Stathead tool, and he’s the second to achieve that feat this season, joining shortstop Dansby Swanson, who did so against the San Diego Padres in early July.
Swanson and Bregman also teamed up to make some history of their own. According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, the Cubs are now the third team since 1920 to have two players each have games where they hit three home runs and drove in seven RBI’s in the same season, with multiple pairs of New York Yankees teammates achieving that feat in 1995 and 2025.
The victory over the Nationals also gives the Cubs their ninth consecutive road series victory, and they’ll be going for a sweep when they face Washington on Thursday afternoon at Nationals Park.
