The planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale series will not be moving forward at Hulu, according toSarah Michelle Gellar, who was set to star in and executive produce the project.
Gellar shared the news with fans in a video on Instagram, “So I am really sad to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.” the actress began.
Chloe also expressed appreciation for the project’s creative team, including director Chloé Zhao. “I wanna thank Chloé Zhao I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you, and this doesn’t change any of that,”
She concluded her message with a humorous nod to the series’ supernatural themes. “I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can beep me.”

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series ran for seven seasons, originally on The WB from 1997 until 2001 before moving to the UPN for its final two seasons from 2001 until 2003.
The story continued in comic book form after the television series ended, with Joss Whedon serving as a producer. The comics were marketed as Season 8 through 12 and concluded in 2018.
The Buffyverse also expanded with its spin-off series Angel, starring David Boreanaz.
Since the show ended, several additional projects have been proposed, including a potential Ripper series centered on Rupert Giles (played by Anthony Stewart Head) and a possible Spike-focused film starring James Marsters.
