UA Social work dean steps down

The University announced Wednesday Schnaiva Smith Hatcher, the dean of the School of Social Work, will step down from her position in August. She has served in the role since 2021 and will remain at the University as a professor.

During her tenure, the School of Social Work underwent growth nationally and statewide. Over 90% of the school’s bachelors-level graduates remained in Alabama. The school was also named one of the top social work programs in the country by the U.S News & World Report.

UA School of Social Work graduates account for 65% of Alabama’s licensed clinical social worker pass rates.

Hatcher didn’t state a reason for her departure, but emphasized the importance of the school.

“Serving as dean of the flagship school of social work in my home state has been an extraordinary privilege,” Hatcher said. “I am proud to leave the school stronger, more innovative and well-positioned to advance its mission of addressing adverse social conditions and promoting societal well-being long into the future.”

Students at the School of Social Work have completed 191,450 hours of community service, and is the only university in Alabama that offers all three degree programs in social work.  Social workers are the state’s largest group of mental health service providers.

Hatcher’s departure followed the Alabama State House of Representatives passing a bill in January that established a federal mandate for the school. It was met with slight controversy, with state representatives expressing concern over the future of the school. The bill has not been heard in the state Senate at the time of publication.

Interim Provost Lesley Reid said that under Hatcher’s leadership, the school had “strengthened its academic programs, expanded its research enterprise and deepened its partnerships across the state.”

“We are grateful for her dedicated service and look forward to her continued contributions as a member of our faculty,” she said.

The provost’s office said it would appoint an interim dean in the next month and begin searching for the school’s permanent dean in the fall.
