First tranche of Mandelson papers to be published today

Downing Street will begin releasing documents related to Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to Washington on Wednesday, a minister has said.

Cabinet minister Darren Jones confirmed this morning he will address MPs after Prime Minister’s Questions, following media reports No 10 was preparing to release the first round of Lord Mandelson papers.

Last month, MPs ordered the Government to release thousands of documents relating to Lord Mandelson’s appointment in 2024 after questions over how the peer was vetted and what was known about his links to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The timing of the expected release has led to accusations from the Conservatives that the Prime Minister is attempting to “dodge questions” about Lord Mandelson’s vetting by publishing the documents after PMQs.

Police request to ban pro-Palestine march granted

The Home Secretary has approved a request from the Metropolitan Police to ban a pro-Palestinian march planned for Sunday “to prevent serious public disorder”.

The Al Quds Day march in London had drawn criticism over apparent backing for the Iranian regime after its organisers expressed support for the country’s late leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Several counter-protests had also been planned for the day.

Shabana Mahmood said she was “satisfied doing so is necessary to prevent serious public disorder, due to the scale of the protest and multiple counter-protests, in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East”.

She added: “Should a stationary demonstration proceed, the police will be able to apply strict conditions.

“I expect to see the full force of the law applied to anyone spreading hatred and division instead of exercising their right to peaceful protest.”

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), which organises the protest, has previously insisted the demonstration is always “good natured and peaceful”.

In a statement on the organisation’s website, the IHRC said it “strongly condemns” the decision and was seeking legal advice.

It is the first time a protest march has been banned since 2012.

Speaking to Sky News, Jones said “the first tranche” will be published this afternoon – with a second set of files to be shared “at a later date”.

He said: “There’s been further work that we’ve had to do across government in response to the Humble Address, which is not quite ready.”

    ‘Urgency and transparency’

A Commons motion called for the release of a huge range of material, including messages between Lord Mandelson and ministers and senior officials that could prove embarrassing for the Government.

Following the vote, Sir Keir Starmer said he wanted to ensure “urgency and transparency” and apologised for believing the peer’s “lies” about the extent of his relationship with Epstein.

Some files are expected to be withheld for national security or foreign relations reasons, but the final say over which documents are redacted rests with Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee.
