Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad admitted he was left “pretty speechless” after delivering a stunning points finish on his F1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix – a race where the teenager briefly fought wheel-to-wheel with a few of the sport’s frontrunners.
The 18-year-old Briton produced one of the standout performances of the race at Albert Park Circuit, crossing the checkered flag in eighth place after a bold opening lap that briefly launched him into the top three.
For a driver making his first appearance on the motorsport’s biggest stage, the moment proved almost overwhelming.
“I'm pretty speechless to be honest, it was a pretty nuts race,” Lindblad told Sky Sports F1.
“Coming into the weekend, points were not the expectation. I had hopes after yesterday, but I'm extremely happy, I'm extremely grateful to everyone from the team, from RBPT and Ford, for giving me the package to fight.
“But to be honest, I think saying points on debut doesn't really summarise the race. Being P3 at one point on lap one was a lot more than I expected. I think I showed people a bit of what I'm here to do.”
A Fearless First Lap Among F1’s Giants
Lindblad’s debut could hardly have been more dramatic. A brilliant launch off the line briefly propelled him into fourth place before seizing third from fellow young bull Isack Hadjar and then battling in close contention with Lewis Hamilton.
Unfortunately, the Racing Bulls car lacked the outright pace to remain near the front across the 58-lap race, gradually dropping Lindblad down the order. But the young driver’s willingness to race hard against established champions caught the attention of pundits and fans alike.
At one point, the rookie even attempted to hold off Max Verstappen, forcing the four-time world champion to work for the overtake.
“That was pretty cool,” said Lindblad in his print media session. “Sharing the track, battling with Lewis, Max, Lando and all these guys. It's very special. Yeah, I was having a lot of fun out there.”
A Ruthless Competitor Emerges
While eighth place earned Lindblad valuable championship points, the real statement may have been his fearless attitude when fighting Formula 1’s elite.
After a swift climb up the junior ladder – including a sixth-place finish in Formula 2 last season – the young Briton said the moment represented the fulfillment of a lifelong pursuit.
“I've been working my whole life to get to Formula 1 and this weekend's been a very special moment for me,” Lindblad said.
But respect for the sport’s veterans does not mean surrendering track position.

“When I'm in the car, I'm a ruthless competitor, and I'm going to take every inch that I can get, and I think I showed that on lap one.”
If his debut in Melbourne is anything to go by, Formula 1 may have just discovered its next fearless racer.
