Cubs Prospect Notes: Spring Breakout Change, Ramirez, Rojas, Kepley, Pitching Prospects

Some Cubs and MLB prospect notes for you today …

This year’s Spring Breakout games are coming soon for prospects around baseball (the Cubs play Saturday, March 21 against the Padres), but Major League Baseball has announced a significant change to the event starting in 2027:

Spring Breakout is being expanded to a single-elimination tournament in 2027 and '28!Complete details: t.co/cwSQNkz7jh pic.twitter.com/iAbGoRUYuc

    — MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) March 2, 2026 So there will now be two single-game elimination tournaments (Cactus League and Grapefruit League), with a chance for some group of prospects to win a ring, so to speak. Could be quite a bit of fun, especially since it spotlights players who aren’t already on 40-man rosters. Now, if you’re deeply cynical, you’re thinking about the fact that MLB players could still be locked out come next March, and since MiLB players are still going to be on an in-effect CBA, this new structure will allow MLB to have some games to show at a time when there otherwise will be none. The response there, though, is … would some televised/streamed prospect games really make up for the losses owners would be facing by missing regular season MLB games? And thus buy them more time to hold the players’ feet to the fire in the CBA negotiations? I tend to doubt it. Not sure how much this is a hedge in that respect. It’s probably just something MLB wants to do anyway. That said, I bet a whole lot of prospects would feel awkward about playing in a tournament under MLB’s direction at a time when their big league counterparts are locked out and in a labor battle. Let’s just hope it doesn’t play out that way. Pedro Ramirez was added to the Cubs’ 40-man roster last fall to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, and he’ll be headed to Triple-A Iowa to open the season and continue his journey to the big leagues. In the meantime, the 21-year-old switch-hitter and MiLB Gold Glove defender has been impressing at big league camp. From the Tribune:

“Putting defenders on the field is something we’re always trying to do, and Pedro has certainly shown early in his career that he can handle himself defensively,” manager Craig Counsell said Sunday.

Counsell expects Ramírez, who predominantly played third and second base last year, to “expand his value” by moving around defensively this year.

“As you break into the big leagues, sometimes you’re not going to just be handed a position. You’re probably going to have to move around, and where the opportunity happens is where you get to play,” Counsell said. “But the fact that he’s got that (Gold Glove Award) attached to him means he should be able to handle new positions and other positions.

“Your job is to kind of make us say after this camp, when something happens, we can call on you.”

And Pedro Ramirez gets more love at Cubs.com, too, where he shares his appreciation for being able to learn from Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson, and Alex Bregman this spring. Meanwhile, fellow infield prospect Jefferson Rojas is getting a whole lot of positive attention this spring, looking quite mature for a 20-year-old who has barely played at Double-A. Craig Counsell told the Tribune that the goal for Rojas this year is to get into a place where he looks ready to contribute in the big leagues by the end of the minor league season. He admits that is an ambitious goal given Rojas’s youth, but you don’t have to watch him much to see that it’s possible. Hopefully by midseason, Rojas is raking at Knoxville, and forces his way up to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs will have their reasons for the development trajectory on outfield prospect Kane Kepley, but Greg is likely right that he won’t face a serious challenge until Double-A:

I’ll say it again:Kepley was better than 95% the players in Low-A but was assigned there anyway. He’ll be better than 80% of the players in High-A but will be assigned there anyway.Get this man to Double-A where significant development challenges can take place. t.co/PkIMIfdKkd

    — Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) February 28, 2026 Much more Kane Kepley talk here if you’ve missed it. The Cubs likely got themselves a very interesting prospect in the second round. (And we haven’t even yet gotten to see first rounder Ethan Conrad make his debut!) Some Cubs pitching prospects starting to build up, with photos from Rich (Cubs really need some big 2026 breakouts from these types of prospects):

The Cubs 3rd round draft pick in 2025 was pitcher @DominickReid5. He didn't pitch following the draft so it was great to see him facing some hitters. #Cubs #ST2026 pic.twitter.com/ezkWinqLGO
