After a long offseason of rumors, the Denver Nuggets have finally made a decision involving Peyton Watson.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Nuggets are sign-and-trading Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers in what is initially a three-team deal with the Nuggets receiving draft picks.

Watson will sign a four-year, $88 million deal with a player option and trade kicker, likely becoming the new starting small forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the process. The Cavaliers went to the Eastern Conference Finals last year but are still taking chances and trying to reconfigure their roster to best suit Donovan Mitchell, and Watson should be a tremendous fit.
As for the Nuggets, they will receive a 2031 first round pick via the Cavaliers and a 2032 second round pick via the Sacramento Kings. Denver doesn’t receive any players back in this deal, with Cleveland’s Max Strus being sent to the Los Angeles Clippers instead in order to facilitate the transaction.
Watson spent four seasons developing for the Nuggets, going from a bench warmer in his rookie season to a rotation player in year two and year three. This past season saw a significant breakout, with Watson starting 40 out of 54 games and averaging career highs in almost every category.
Even if Watson doesn’t get better from here, a 6’8″ small forward who averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.0 combined steals + blocks while shooting 49.1% from the field and 41.1% from three is a very, very strong player. That’s worth the contract Watson just signed with a team that has championship aspirations.
But the appeal with Watson is his ability to improve beyond those numbers. In January of this past season, Watson’s averages rose across the board while adapting to an injured Nuggets rotation. Without Nikola Jokic, Watson showed the ability to self-create, shoot off the dribble, and be a playmaker for others. At 23 years old, the Cavaliers are also paying the price to see if Watson can develop beyond his current per game averages into a potential star.
The Nuggets, it seems, were not willing to pay that price. Instead, they will lose Watson after developing him for four seasons having traded him for picks in the future. What the Nuggets do with those picks is one thing. What they are not (currently) is a player capable of developing in real-time to be a helpful piece on a playoff contender. The Nuggets lose one of their higher ceiling players and replace him with nothing on the current roster.
Where that leaves the Nuggets is in a really uncomfortable place. On one hand, the Nuggets still have an elite starting five of Jamal Murray, Christian Braun, Cam Johnson, Aaron Gordon, and Nikola Jokic. That hasn’t changed, and if those five can stay healthy, the Nuggets will still have another great regular season.
But Denver’s depth has taken a significant hit this offseason as they’ve held onto that pricy group. Gone are Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr. Bruce Brown, and Jonas Valanciunas, all key members of Denver’s rotation. Denver did retain Spencer Jones, but their current bench around Jones features Tyus Jones, Julian Strawther, Alpha Diallo, and Marvin Bagley III.
The reality is, the Nuggets have gotten worse. They made aggressive moves last offseason to try to improve, but those didn’t work out. Now, they’re stuck. Perhaps acquiring some extra draft capital allows them to get unstuck, but at the cost of losing a 23-year-old wing with two-way versatility? That’s not a price I would’ve paid.
