European Champion Nikita Sheremet Did Not Want to be Photographed with Russian Medalist

By Braden Keith on SwimSwam

Ukrainian swimmer Nikita Sheremet did not want to be photographed with his Russian competitor Egor Kornev on the podium of the men’s 50 free at the recent European Aquatics Championships. Credentialed photographers at the meet were informed of the request.

Public political displays in sporting events have been relatively rare in the spotlight of athletics as war rages between the two nations. While Ukraine has been actively lobbying international sporting associations to continue excluding Russia (and Belarus) from international competitions, most of the Olympic movement has readmitted those athletes to one degree or another.

Athletes from Russia were still competing under the banner of Authorized Neutral Athletes over the last two weeks in Paris at the European Aquatics Championships.

While there are many wars ongoing around the world, Russia’s war of Ukraine stands out among them as being fought between two nations with high-profile international aquatics athletes.

Athletes from Ukraine and Russia shared podiums three times at the European Aquatics Championships. Twice were in diving events, and once was in the men’s 50 free. Sheremet won gold, while Kornev tied for silver.

The Ukrainian Sheremet after the race asked not to be photographed with the Russian Kornev.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and in the early months of fighting, Russia was gradually barred from most major international sporting competitions. Over time, with fighting still ongoing, those initial sanctions have been gradually lifted, first to allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes who have not publicly affiliated with the military conflict to compete as neutral athletes, and more recently broader lifting of sporting sanctions.

International observing groups have estimated that the fighting has killed between 450,000 and 500,000 Russians and 125,000 to 150,000 Ukrainians. That includes at least 12,000 documented civilian deaths in Ukraine according to the United Nations.
