Cubs President Jed Hoyer Speaks: Bregman, Cabrera, Horton, PCA, CBA, More

Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer hopped on a couple podcasts this week, speaking with both ESPN and the New York Post in quick succession.

I’ve embedded both interviews below for your full consumption, but wanted to touch on some of the highlights from my watch/listen:

In national interviews, you could understand why much of the conversation was about the Alex Bregman pursuit and signing. There wasn’t much in those portions that would shock you, but it was nevertheless good to hear Hoyer talk about Bregman going over to the minor league side the other day and talking with prospects about their swings. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen on the regular, but in my years going to Spring Training, I spent a fair bit of time over at the minor league side, and I could probably count on one hand the number of times I saw an established star veteran come over to meet with the youngsters doing their work. Hoyer noted that the Cubs’ Director of Player Development (i.e. the farm director), Jason Kanzler, was actually pretty important in the Alex Bregman recruitment, having served as one of his hitting coaches back in Houston. Another good reason to infuse your organization with top talents on the front office/coaching/player development side – you’ll have more connections like that available when you need them. The Cubs largely accomplished what they set out to do this offseason, though Hoyer mentioned that you have to have tons of contingency plans, and that there were some deals that didn’t come together (he seemed to imply that some of them weren’t reported on, either). Makes you wonder what those really were. No surprise given the way the team has been constructed, but Jed Hoyer sees defense as an area that is still undervalued/underrated around the league, which means it is an area where the Cubs can have an edge. A lot of the desire to acquire Edward Cabrera was how much he brings a different look to the rotation, which we know has been largely contact-oriented (which ties, obviously, to the strong defense, but it’s not like more strikeouts is a bad thing). I have always liked this idea of giving an opposing team lots of different types of looks from your pitching staff. Gotta love the way Hoyer talked about Cade Horton’s potential, with a specific reference to how much he developed during last season, alone (from the first outing against the Mets to the point where he was by September). It makes you hopeful that he could get even better this year. Hoyer attributed at least some of the fall-off in the second half last year for Pete Crow-Armstrong to swing decisions (swinging too often, swinging at the wrong pitches, over-swinging at times), which is something he’s been working on. Guys tend not to fundamentally transform on that side of things in their professional career, but they can absolutely improve incrementally over the years. PCA, himself, talked about wanting to manage his emotions on the field a little better going forward, but Hoyer talked about how you don’t want to extinguish the fire. Yes, Hoyer was asked about extensions, and, no, he didn’t take the bait. He never does. Relatedly, Hoyer said, as he has before, that the Cubs didn’t operate in a certain way BECAUSE of the possibility of a lockout after 2026, but concedes that the timing of the CBA and the number of expiring deals they have this year is probably not entirely a coincidence. To me, it makes me wonder if the Cubs right now would be a little less eager to sign a huge extension with a guy like Nico Hoerner or Ian Happ or Seiya Suzuki ahead of their free agency. They clearly were thinking about the flexibility that they might want to have if the landscape changes dramatically under a new CBA.
