Windsor’s Dom Serrano leads UNC Bears wrestling to Big 12 Conference Championships
Dominick Serrano rested his body and his mind last week.

It’s time for the postseason in college wrestling, and Serrano wants to be in the best shape – both mentally and physically – for his final run.

Serrano and the University of Northern Colorado wrestling team will compete at the Big 12 Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. All sessions will be streamed on ESPN+.

“For me, it’s honestly, I have to be backing off a little and taking some rest days,” Serrano said last week. “It’s intentional and in rehab or watching film, I have to be locked in in those areas.”

Serrano (15-1 record this season) is the fourth seed at 133 pounds, and the highest seed among UNC wrestlers at the conference championships. He is the defending Big 12 champion in the weight class.

Serrano earned a bye into the quarterfinals. In his first match in Tulsa, he’ll wrestle either No. 5 Gunner Andrick from West Virginia or unseeded Carter Schmidt of Oklahoma.

Serrano’s only loss this season is to Iowa State’s Evan Frost (10-1), who is the second seed. The top seed at 133 is Oklahoma State’s Jax Forrest (9-0).

In his final year of collegiate wrestling, Serrano goes to the conference championships likely as the Bears’ best chance for a conference title and to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships March 19-21 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Serrano, who was a four-time Colorado high school champion at Windsor, qualified for NCAAs last year as one of four UNC wrestlers to get to the national tournament. He did not place at NCAAs.

Late last week, Serrano said he’s more excited thinking about the conference championships than in previous days. Serrano said he was nervous earlier in the week thinking about the conference meet. He had conversations with first-year head coach Teyon Ware and assistant coach Earl Hall, and those talks settled Serrano’s mind.

“Now I’m grateful and I’m excited,” Serrano added. “At the end of the day, I’m going to be Dom Serrano and the rest will take care of itself.”

The other UNC wrestlers in the conference championships and their first-round opponents are:

Bryson Valdez (2-13), unseeded at 125, will face No. 3 Jett Strickenberger of West Virginia in an opening match Friday morning. Joel Aguilar-Guerrero (5-5), unseeded at 141, vs. No. 6 Tyler Wells of Oklahoma.

Kenneth Evans (10-9), unseeded at 149, vs. No. 2 Jacob Frost of Iowa State.

Daishun Powe (11-13), unseeded at 157, vs. No. 2 Vinny Zerban (14-3) of Iowa State.

Zerban transferred to Iowa State from UNC for this season. He qualified for NCAAs last year for the Bears and earned All-American status with a top eight finish.

Kilian Schultz (8-10), unseeded at 165, vs. No. 1 LaDarion Lockett of Oklahoma State. Schultz is a junior from Severance and Severance High School.

Murphy Menke (10-8), unseeded at 174, vs. No. 4 MJ Gaitan of Iowa State.

Mahonri Rushton (14-12), unseeded at 184, vs. No. 5 Nick Fox of Northern Iowa.

Tyler Perry (5-15), unseeded at 197, vs. No. 4 Bennett Berge of South Dakota State.

Enzo Cappabianca (0-19), unseeded at 285, vs. No. 2 Konner Doucet of Oklahoma State.

UNC finished the regular season Feb. 22 with a 19-17 win over Air Force.

Ware said last week he told the athletes it’s a new season and everyone has a 0-0 record.

“No one cares what you’ve done in the regular season,” Ware said. “This tournament determines if you’re going to Cleveland or not.”
