The Chicago Bears have spent a lot of time in the national spotlight this season, and now they’ll begin a stretch of three straight primetime games, starting with their Thursday Night Football matchup with the New England Patriots this week.
Thursday marks the ninth time the Bears have been featured on TNF, and they enter with a 7-8 overall record, a 5-3 record at Soldier Field, and 2-5 on the road. TNF has produced some weird nights in the franchise’s recent history. The 16-0 shutout in Miami in 2010 was the last time the Bears blanked anybody. Tom Brady seemed to lose track of the downs on the final drive of a 20-19 loss at Soldier Field in 2020, right after Cairo Santos put Chicago ahead with 1:13 left. And there was DJ Moore’s 230-yard, three-touchdown night in Washington in 2023, a 40-20 win that ended a 14-game losing streak on the same day Dick Butkus died. The Bears’ last TNF game was December 26, 2024, and that was arguably one of the worst Bears games we’ve ever watched. It was a brutal 6-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the lowest-scoring Thursday game since 1980. That was Caleb Williams’ first TNF start. His second comes this week against the Patriots, with the two teams meeting on TNF for the first time. © Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images Williams has had a tale-of-two-stories type of resume in primetime since arriving in Chicago (for our purposes, primetime includes Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, Black Friday, Saturday night games, and the postseason). During his rookie season, with Matt Eberflus as the head coach, he and the Bears went 0-3, losing 19-13 to the Texans on Sunday Night Football, 30-12 to the Vikings on Monday Night Football, and then 6-3 to the Seahawks on TNF. Since Ben Johnson arrived, Williams is 3-2 in the regular season and 1-1 in the postseason in primetime, and the Bears as a team are 4-2 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs, with Williams missing the MNF victory over the Eagles a few weeks ago with a hamstring injury. In primetime games, including the playoffs, Williams is 203-for-362 for 2,301 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions overall, and 146-for-266 for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions since Johnson took over before the 2025 season. TNF will be the second time Williams and fellow 2024 first-rounder Drake Maye have squared off, with the last coming in 2024 under Eberflus. New England won 19-3, and Drake Maye completed 15-of-25 passes for 184 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Williams completed 16-of-30 for 120 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions, and was sacked a season-high nine times. © Mike Dinovo-Imagn Images Did anyone catch the Daniel Hardy, Jeff Hardy (of the Hardy Boyz) celebration on Sunday? With Dennis Allen’s defense missing multiple starters, he needed someone to step up this week, and Daniel Hardy did, notching his first NFL sack against the Falcons. “I thought Daniel Hardy did a good job when it got to some of the rush stuff,” Allen said on Monday. “I thought there were a couple of really good rushes that he had.” According to Pro Football Focus, Hardy has six pressures on Sunday, the most by any Bears player in a single game this season. Not too shabby. With Montez Sweat still suspended, Hardy will likely get more snaps on Thursday for Chicago. “He’s always played with great effort,” Allen said of Hardy. “He’s always played with a lot of speed. So I think those were a couple of things that we thought putting him out there in some of the third-down rush package stuff that he could potentially affect the quarterback.” ICYMI, and you’re from a certain era that can appreciate the crossover value here:Hardy ?
