TEHRAN, Iran — Ayatollah Alireza Arafi was named to Iran’s interim leadership council following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The council is tasked with running the country until the Assembly of Experts elects a new leader.
Arafi, 66, was appointed as the jurist member of the council. He has been a member of both the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts, which will choose the next leader.
In 2019, Arafi was handpicked by the late Khamenei as a member of the Guardian Council.
