Yorktown Girls, Langley Boys Add To Recent Titles At Virginia Class 6 State Championships

Two familiar programs were once again at the top of the podium at the Virginia High School League Class 6 State Swimming and Diving Championships.

    Class 6 is the largest classification for swimming and diving in Virginia.

    The Yorktown girls’ team won its fourth straight state title, finishing 118.5 points better than runner-up Robinson Secondary.

    The Langley boys’ team, which avenged a runner-up finish to Chantilly last year by winning it all, finished 52.5 points ahead of Chantilly this year.

    Girls’ Recap

    There was a record-setting performance in the diving event from James Madison senior Marleigh daSilva.

    After breaking her own Virginia 11-dive state record earlier in February with a score of 515.90, daSilva set a new state meet record, winning the diving competition with a final score of 501.85. The old record was 498.50 set in 2023 by Amanda Stalfort.

    The top point getter for Yorktown was senior Sophie Fredericks, a Delaware commit who repeated as champion in the 100 fly in a personal best time of 53.55.

    She was also a part of two of Yorktown’s three winning relay teams.

    First, Fredericks split 24.14 on the fly leg of Yorktown’s 200 medley relay team that won in 1:44.47. Other team members were McKenzie Cory (25.02), Emory Haynes (30.59), and Alex Bristow (24.72).

    In the 200 free relay, Fredericks swam a leadoff leg of 23.73 to help Yorktown win in 1:35.29. The other team members were  Mary Hecmanczuk (23.97), Jackie Furches (24.17) and Lila Sherman (23.42).

    In the 400 free relay, Yorktown made it a clean sweep of the relays behind the squad of Cory (51.37), Sherman (51.20), Hecmanczuk (51.91) and Furches (52.32), which won in 3:26.80.

    Individually, there were three multiple-event winners:, Battlefield senior Alyssa Sagle, Fairfax junior Sadie Buckley and Robinson Secondary senior Lilla Wilbur.

    Committed to Virginia, Sagle won the 50 free in a personal best of 23.04 and then repeated as champion in the 100 back with a personal best time of 50.56.

    Sagle broke the National High School Record of 50.97 set in 2023 by Maggie Wanezek at the Wisconsin High School state meet.

    The time put her 12th all-time in the girls’ 17-18 age group.

    Buckley, who has committed to Texas, won the 200 free in a personal best 1:46.48 and repeated as champion in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.34.

    A Wisconsin commit, Wilbur won the 200 IM in 2:02.68 after finishing 2nd in the event last year, and then repeated as champion in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.99.

    The other individual event winner was  Cosby senior Ally Vernon, a Virginia Tech commit , who won the 100 free in a personal best of 49.49 after finishing 2nd in the event last year.

    Boys’ Recap

    Langley won just one event, the 200 medley relay, where the quartet of Michael Zhou (23.28), Parris Garvin (25.07), Max Thompson (21.57) and Ethan Shin (20.66) combined for a time of 1:30.58 to kick the meet off on a high note..

    Garvin was the top point-getter for Langley, finishing 2nd in the 200 free (1:39.50) and the 100 breast (55.74).

    The individual standouts were Chantilly senior Yaron Li and Colgan senior Alex Grocholski.

    Li, a Cornell commit, won the 50 free in 20.25, the 100 free in 44.07 after finishing 2nd last year, and was a part of two winning relay teams.

    In the 200 free relay, Li swam an anchor split of 19.59 to help Chantilly win in 1:23.58. Other team members were Adam Aly (21.70), Jaxon Xin (21.09) and Ben Matyas (21.20).

    Li also swam anchor in the 400 free relay, coming in with a split of 43.51 to help Chantilly win with a time of 3:05.93. The other team members were Matyas (47.83), Noah Sharabi (48.50) and Kyle Li (46.09).

    Grocholski, a Virginia Tech commit, repeated as champion in both the 200 IM (1:47.15) and 500 free (4:26.37). Other individual winners were:

    McLean senior Bruno Haggard improved on an 8th-place finish in the 200 free from last year, winning that event in a personal best 1:39.12. Chantilly senior Ivor Brown won the 1-meter diving event with 584.50 points. Alexandria junior Tobias Damico-Lassman won the 100 fly in a personal best of 49.10. Independence junior Kyle Gadsby took the 100 back in a personal best of 48.61, improving on a 4th-place finish last year. Kyle Li, a senior for Chantilly and Columbia commit, repeated as champion in the 100 breast with a time of 53.54.
