Kliment KOLESNIKOV (NAB) – 53.16 Oliver MORGAN (GBR) – 53.91 Georgii SMIRNOV (NAB) – 54.11We saw some big names fall early on in the men’s 100 back at the 2026 European Championships, with 2025 World Championship finalists Kliment Kolesnikov and Ollie Morgan missing out as the third-fastest swimmer from their nation. Last night’s 50 back champion Miroslav Knedla also missed out after adding two seconds to finish 40th.
Kolesnikov placed 6th in Singapore last summer and is the 4th-fastest swimmer in history with a 51.82 from Swimming Cup Of Russia meet in 2023.
He owns the Russian record with that swim, although Miron Lifinstsev clocked a 51.78 leadoff on the mixed medley relay at the World Championships last year, as mixed leadoffs were not eligible for records at the time. World Aquatics released updated competition regulations recently which removed the rule that these swims were not eligible.
Men’s 100 Back, Top Five All-Time
Thomas Ceccon (ITA), 2022 – 51.60 Pieter Coetze (RSA), 2026 – 51.71 Miron Lifintsev (RUS), 2025 – 51.78 Kliment Jolesnikov (RUS), 2023- 51.82 Ryan Murphy (USA), 2016 – 51.85Kolesnikov clocked a 53.16 and was beaten by Pavel Samusenko (52.94) and 19-year-old Georgii Iakovlev (53.15), who missed out himself due to the “two-per-nation” rule in the 50 back after initially placing 5th in 24.47.
Iakovlev swam in the final heat with Kolesnikov, as the 50 back silver medalist seemed to have overtaken the youngster heading into the final few meters. However, Iakovlev spotted his finish to perfection to get his hand to the wall first and move through to his first international semi-finals. He shaved 0.04 seconds off his previous best of 53.19.
British record holder Ollie Morgan, who has had some disruptions to his training in recent months with some time out of the water after the Aquatics GB Championships in May and a move of training center from Birmingham to Manchester, added a second and a half to his season best in 53.91.
That placed him behind compatriots Matt Ward (53.73) and Jack Skerry (53.76), pushing Morgan out of the semi-final despite finishing 14th. Ward owns the Scottish record at 53.29, while Skerry won European U23 gold last summer in a time of 53.35.
Morgan owns the British record with the 52.12 he swam at the Aquatics GB Championships last year, and finished 5th at the 2025 World Championships in 52.37. His season best is a 52.41 from the Aquatics GB Championships in April, which ranks him third in the world this season. Kolesnikov ranks 5th with his 52.51 from the Russian Swimming Championships.

He was over a second slower today, and has not quite looked at his best this meet. He did not enter the 200 back, only made the 50 back semi-finals after a swim-off, and then placed 12th to miss out on the final.
There will now be questions over the medley relay leadoff for both the NAB and British teams tomorrow. Kolesnikov and Morgan would have likely been the leadoff legs in the final, but with two swimmers ahead of each of them they may swim in the prelims only or not at all.
However, with the 100 back final coming in the same session tomorrow, with just over an hour between the 100 back final (19:06) and he men’s 4×100 medley final (20:11), this may make using them a more attractive proposition.
The final big name to miss out was Czechia’s 50 back champion Miroslav Knedla, who moved into the top ten all-time with his 24.11 in that event last night. He added 2.21 seconds this morning with a 55.36, finishing well outside the qualifiers in 40th.
His lifetime best is 53.15 from the World Championships semi-finals last summer, although his season best was just 54.02. However, after big lifetime bests in both the 50 back (24.43 to 24.11) and the 200 back (1:58.45 to 1:56.26), he may have expected to be faster here.
