‘Team believed in Me’: Abhishek Sharma gets emotional after heroic knock in Chennai

Abhishek Sharma answered his critics with the bat. Under immense pressure, Abhishek Sharma smashed 55 runs off just 30 balls and powered India to a thumping 72-run win over Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2028 Super 8 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Before this Super 8 match, the young Indian opener had scored three ducks and 15 runs against South Africa in his four outings in the tournament. This slump led many cricket experts and former cricketers to question his place in the playing XI. There was huge pressure on him.

But the Punjab lad did not back down. He started slow with Sanju Samson at the other end, but when he spotted his chance, he attacked Tinotenda Maposa. Once he found rhythm, the left-handed batter played fearless cricket and entertained the Chennai crowd.

He played a 30-ball 55 knock that helped India beat Zimbabwe by 72 runs in the Super 8 game on February 26. After India's big win over Zimbabwe in Chennai, Abhishek admitted he felt huge relief after intense backlash from all quarters.

‘Team believed in me when I didn’t’: Abhishek Sharma

He said the team believed in him even when he did not believe in himself. The Indian opener revealed that Indian coaches, the captain, and teammates stood by him during his worst days and that support was really crucial for him, calling the dressing room a family.

Abhishek Sharma said in a video posted by BCCI, "Of course, there is a relief, but what I felt the day I spent with the team was more like they had more belief than me. So, I think that was the one thing I really enjoyed and actually made me a bit emotional as well. I wasn't doing so well; I was trying my best, but still it wasn't coming out, the outcome wasn't coming out the best.”

He added, “But the way teammates and coaches, they all just wanted me to do well. I think that was the best thing, one of the best feelings I had in all these previous days. It's actually meant like, you know, you are in a family only; it's not just a team. So you are that close with all of the teammates and all the coaches, like they actually want you to do well, and I was just waiting for this day.”

His journey in this tournament started on a tough note. The 25-year-old fell ill during the opening game against the USA in Mumbai. He had a high fever and still played but got out for a golden duck. He was admitted to the hospital, and then weakness forced him to miss the Namibia match.

Abhishek further added, “It didn't start the way I wanted; I was actually in the hospital, and I wasn't feeling so well that, you know, I could play the first game for the country, and that was also in the World Cup, and it wasn't a positive start or maybe the best start I wanted.”

India opener hails Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav for supporting him

He admitted that he felt like he would miss the T20 World Cup 2026, but the captain, Suryakumar Yadav, and coach, Gautam Gambhir, gave him strong backing that gave him strength.

The Punjab lad further explained, “Still, I feel the support, the love, and the teammates that they all have showed me throughout all these days, especially the coach and captain. No matter if you do another zero, probably get out early, you're going to play all the games, and you're going to win the games for the team. So, I think that's very important as a player to have that support from the team and the coaches.”

Abhishek dedicated his Chennai performance to his team, saying he “loves this team” and his teammates actually wanted me to do really well.”
