A “weather whiplash” for the Chicago area begins Friday, with temperatures nearly 20 degrees above average and winds gusting as high as 40 mph before two rounds of snow move in to usher in meteorological spring.
“A nice warm day for your Friday,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. “But things will change.”
Friday morning started out foggy, Roman said, with visibility below a quarter mile for some, especially in parts to the west and across the Fox Valley.
Daylight saving time comes early this year. Here’s when to ‘spring forward’ for 2026
“Some freezing fog is possible,” Roman warned, for the morning rush hour commute. “Fog stays close to the ground, so roadways could be slick out there.”
The National Weather Service told that drivers Friday morning to be prepared for sudden changes in visibility, with fog gradually lifting after sunrise.
As the day continues, winds will pick up, Roman said, with gusts as high as 40 mph. The strongest winds will be between 2 p.m. 6 p.m., Roman said, with temperatures topping out in the low-to-mid 60s.
Such warm, windy and dry conditions will lead to an increased fire risk.
“Any grass or brush fires that ignite may have the potential to quickly spread out of control,” the NWS cautioned.
The fire threat comes a day after many reported smelling smoke in the Chicago area Thursday, with the air quality index measuring at “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” The latest data from AirNow shows fires burning across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, with smoke blowing from the southwest and into the upper Midwest.
As of early Friday, Chicago’s air quality ranked as “moderate.”
2 rounds of snow
The 60-degree temperatures won’t last long, Roman said, as a cold front Saturday brings a series of “clipper systems” to the area.
About 11 a.m. Saturday, snow was expected to fall across the far northern counties and parts of southeastern Wisconsin, Roman said, ending by Saturday night. Saturday will also see a wide range of temperatures, with 30s to the north and low 50s to the south.
Sunday night into Monday, temperatures will dip again as another system is set to bring accumulating snow. Snow is expected to linger through the Monday morning commute, Roman said.
When all is said and done, some areas, especially in Chicago’s far southern counties, could see between two and four inches of snow, Roman said.
By midweek next week, temperatures will bump back up into the 40s and 50s, with several chances for rain.
