ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Maybe you are feeling a little desperate for more sunlight, you are probably not alone. Late winter can feel especially long, but there is good news because the most difficult stretch of the season is now behind us.
In Rochester daylight will continue to expand noticeably in the coming weeks. The change becomes especially apparent in the early evening hours. At 6:00 PM, we are currently still in dusk. However, in just two weeks, by March 12, sunset will extend to 7:13 PM, thanks in part to the return of daylight saving time.
Here’s a look at how quickly evenings are brightening:

As we move later into the season, the sun’s angle in the sky climbs higher each day. On December 21, the winter solstice, the sun reached a maximum elevation of only about 23 degrees above the horizon at midday. By the spring equinox on March 20, that angle will more than double to approximately 47 degrees.
By the time we reach the summer solstice on June 21, the sun will climb to nearly 70 degrees above the horizon. This is its highest point of the year. The higher the sun angle, the longer the daylight and the stronger the solar energy reaching the surface.
It is remarkable how much of a difference increasing sunshine can make this time of year. The days are getting longer, the sun is climbing higher, and the seasonal shift is well underway.
