‘90s Classic Voted ‘Most Groundbreaking TV Drama’ of All Time

A beloved 1990s mystery series has claimed the top spot on Collider’s list of the most groundbreaking TV dramas ever. The honor went to Twin Peaks, the surreal small-town thriller co-created by David Lynch and Mark Frost.

The ranking places the ABC drama above other heavy hitters like The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. While those shows changed television in major ways, Collider says Twin Peaks did it first.

The series first aired on ABC on April 8, 1990. It ran for two seasons before ending in 1991. A revival season, Twin Peaks: The Return, premiered on Showtime in 2017, 25 years after the original finale.

At its heart, Twin Peaks begins with one big question: “Who killed Laura Palmer?” The murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer shocks the quiet logging town of Twin Peaks, Washington.

FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, arrives to solve the case. What starts as a murder mystery quickly becomes something stranger, filled with dreams, dark secrets and supernatural forces.

Before cable dramas became known for cinematic quality, Twin Peaks brought movie-style storytelling to network television. The show mixed mystery, horror, soap opera drama and quirky comedy in a way viewers had never seen before.

The pilot episode alone set a new standard. It introduced Laura’s tragic death, her grieving mother Sarah’s shocking vision, and the eerie tone that would define the series. In one alternate international ending of the pilot, the story dives even deeper into supernatural elements, including the terrifying entity BOB and the mysterious Red Room. These strange images became part of the show’s lasting mythology.

The series also explored dark themes like abuse, trauma and dual identities. In a major Season 2 reveal, Laura’s father, Leland Palmer, is exposed as her killer while under the possession of BOB. The episode, directed by Lynch himself, remains one of the most disturbing hours in television history.

In a 2017 interview with TVLine, Lynch said, “The pilot is the only thing I am particularly, extremely proud of. There were great moments along the way. The second season sucked.” His frustration mostly came from network pressure that forced the mystery to be solved earlier than planned.

When Lynch returned for The Return in 2017, he made sure history would not repeat itself. He directed every episode to keep the story consistent. “I wanted it to hold together,” he explained. “I see it as a film.”By naming Twin Peaks the most groundbreaking TV drama of all time, Collider acknowledges that modern prestige television stands on its shoulders. Lightning struck once in 1990 and again in 2017.
