Damascus, Nov. 8 (SANA) Health Minister Mosaab al-Ali announced Sunday during a joint press briefing that health teams have launched an urgent response campaign following the detection of two polio cases in the Mayadin area of Deir Ezzor governorate.
The briefing convened alongside WHO Representative to Syria Caroline Clarinval, UNICEF Representative to Syria Meritxell Relaño Arana, Primary Healthcare Director Mohammad al-Salem, and Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Director Yasser Farrouh.
Targeted vaccination in high-risk zones
Al-Ali stated that mobile medical teams identified high-risk zones and initiated interventions to reach zero-dose children, confirming that over 34,000 children under the age of five have already been vaccinated during the initial drive in Deir Ezzor.
The minister urged parents to visit nearby health centers to ensure their children receive the safe and effective polio vaccine, adding that field testing and surveillance continue across high-priority areas.
UN Support for National Immunization System
WHO Representative Caroline Clarinval affirmed that the organization is conducting joint field assessments with the ministry to scale up vaccination operations.
UNICEF Representative Meritxell Relaño Arana emphasized that the outbreak highlights the urgent need to fortify Syria’s routine immunization infrastructure, reaffirming UNICEF’s commitment to supporting national disease monitoring and vaccine delivery.
