Last year’s address was not technically a State of the Union address, but this week’s speech was, and Trump spoke for one hour and 47 minutes, according to a count by NBC News.
That length makes Tuesday’s State of the Union the longest since recordkeeping began in the 1960’s, according to the American Presidency Project.
According to recordkeeping, the president’s State of the Union address is timed from the moment the president addresses the Speaker of the House to begin their remarks, with those records being kept since the administration of former President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Trump had set the record for the longest speech to a joint session of Congress in 2025, speaking for more than one hour and 39 minutes.
He outdid that speech by eight minutes this year according to NBC News, marking the sixth time his remarks to Congress have exceeded an hour.
The speech has indeed grown longer over the years, with all four of former President Joe Biden’s addresses to Congress running for longer than one hour.
In fact, the last State of the Union that didn’t last an hour was delivered by former President Barack Obama in 2016.
Prior to Trump’s speech Tuesday, the record for the longest State of the Union was held by former President Bill Clinton, who delivered a one hour, 29-minute speech in 2000.
By contrast, Richard Nixon’s average speech was just over 35 minutes, while Gerald Ford’s were an average of 45 minutes.
