The Chargers hired eight new coaches for Jim Harbaugh’s staff Friday, including offensive line coach Butch Barry and linebackers coach Sean Spence. Barry replaces Mike Devlin, who was fired last month along with offensive coordinator Greg Roman, and Spence replaces NaVorro Bowman, who resigned.
In addition, the Chargers hired Julian Campenni as assistant defensive line coach; Rob Everett as assistant offensive assistant; Adam Gase as passing game specialist; Chandler Henry as tight ends coach; Denzel Martin as assistant outside linebackers coach; and Max McCaffrey as running backs coach.
Barry spent the past three seasons in the same role with new Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel while they were with the Miami Dolphins. Spence coached at Western Michigan for the past three seasons, including with new Chargers defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary in 2025.
Campenni joined the Chargers after spending the past two seasons at Rutgers. Everett was with McDaniel in Miami for two seasons. Gase returns to the NFL after head coaching stints with the Dolphins (2016-18) and New York Jets (2019-20). Henley coached with McDaniel for four seasons.
Martin spent 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including as outside linebackers coach for the past three seasons. McCarthy spent three seasons as an offensive assistant on McDaniel’s staff, including in 2023 when the Dolphins led the NFL by averaging 401.3 net yards per game.
