Men’s basketball rolls past South Carolina 89-75, wins fourth straight

Alabama men’s basketball picked up its fourth straight win, cruising by the South Carolina Gamecocks 89-75 on Saturday at Coleman Coliseum.

The win also moved the Crimson Tide to 8-4 in SEC play, keeping its slim chances of an SEC regular season championship alive. Star guards Labaron Philon Jr. and Aden Holloway combined for 39 points and 9 assists in the effort. The pair also combined to knock down eight 3-pointers, with Holloway shooting 4/5 from deep.

“My teammates screened me open,” Philon said postgame. “We’re all just playing off of each other, trying to get great open 3s, that’s the main focus.”

Alabama began the game red-hot from the field, shooting 8/13 and 5/7 from 3. Philon and forward Amari Allen each knocked down two triples.

Guard Jalil Bethea received early minutes for the second game running and quickly made an impact. He notched 6 points and grabbed a rebound in just four minutes of first-half action.

The stellar scoring effort continued for the Crimson Tide as the half progressed. It ended the opening period shooting 16/29 from the field and 9/17 from 3, after entering the break on a measly 8/32 from the field in the 93-74 win over Ole Miss on Wednesday.

Offensive rhythm was harder to come by for Alabama for much of the second half. Its offense opened the half slowly, allowing the Gamecocks to cut the deficit to just 7 points with 8:20 to play. The team’s struggles continued as it shot just 8/22 from the floor and 3/12 from deep with 6:47 remaining.

Alabama’s offense found spurts of scoring but was unable to shake a persistent South Carolina offense, which kept the Crimson Tide’s lead within three and four possessions for much of the second half. Gamecocks star guard Meechie Johnson propelled the resilient effort with 24 second-half points on 7/13 shooting.

Head coach Nate Oats said postgame he was not pleased with his team’s defensive effort, particularly on Johnson.

“We got to get a defensive intensity about us,” Oats said. “We’re still not there yet on the defensive side of the ball. We’ll keep pushing, we’ll keep trying to get better.”

Alabama kept in front as the half approached its end, with its backcourt combining for 38 points in the final 20 minutes. Guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. continued his offensive surge since returning from injury with 11 points in the second half.

One final push from the Gamecocks trimmed the deficit to 8 points, but 13 combined points from Wrightsell and Holloway kept the Crimson Tide in control. Wrightsell’s layup with 1:06 to go extended Alabama’s lead to 15 points, sealing a win that lifted the team to 18-7 on the season.

Alabama will return to action on Wednesday at home, hosting the No. 21 Arkansas Razorbacks at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on ESPN.
