The Beecher Fire Protection District in suburban Will County said it will continue to call for safety improvements at an intersection where one person died in a fiery crash between a semi and two cars on Friday.
The crash occurred around 3:06 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 1 and County Line Road, the fire protection district said. firefighters arrived on scene and found a car that had been heavily damaged and fully engulfed in flames, with the driver trapped, authorities stated.
Crews immediately worked to extinguish the fire, but the person who was trapped inside the car died at the scene. Three others were evaluated by emergency medical personnel and refused treatment.
The semi-truck was significantly damaged, authorities said, while the second car only had minor damage.
According to the fire protection district, many serious and fatal crashes have occurred at the site over the years.
“Today’s loss is another painful reminder that the current conditions at Illinois Route 1 and County Line Road are not acceptable,” the district stated. “The Beecher Fire Protection District will continue to call upon our Illinois State Legislators, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and all appropriate state agencies to prioritize immediate safety improvements at this location.”
