Alabama scored just one touchdown in its SEC matchup against Tennessee on Saturday, which resulted in its first back-to-back SEC loss since 2007.
After a brutal meeting with now-No. 1 Georgia at home last week, Alabama went on the road to Rocky Top to find redemption.
Instead, Alabama found itself struggling offensively.
“Just struggle. Struggle to sustain anything, keeping drives, any continuity there.” head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “You have to find a way to get some explosives against a front like that, and we struggled to do that.”
Alabama hasn’t lost back-to-back games during the regular season since 2007, Nick Saban’s first year as head coach.
The Crimson Tide pulled away with a 7-6 record in 2007, recording four back-to-back losses. The first of which came against SEC opponent LSU.
Then, the Crimson Tide suffered an away game loss to Mississippi State followed up by a home loss to Lousiana Monroe, a game many consider to be one of Saban’s worst losses.
Against Lousiana Monroe turnovers plagued Alabama. The Crimson Tide had two interceptions and two fumbles. While Alabama dominated ULM in total yards, the Warhawks took advantage of Alabama’s turnovers.
In similar fashion, quarterback Keelon Russell threw two interceptions against Tennessee.
In total, Alabama committed four turnovers, one of which Tennessee earned points off of.
“They obviously got to Keelon early on and kept us from being able to really get anything going on,” DeBoer said.
Wrapping up its losing streak in 2007, which was only stopped by the end of the Crimson Tide’s season, Alabama lost the Iron Bowl 17-10.
The last time the Crimson Tide lost two consecutive games outside of the regular season was in 2013 when Alabama fell to Auburn during the Iron Bowl and then to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl post regular season.
In 2013’s Sugar Bowl, then No. 3 Alabama fell to No. 11 Oklahoma 45-31 on a Thursday night. That night, Alabama consistently put balls in the end zone, though, with a touchdown each quarter.
Before its Sugar Bowl loss, Alabama was ranked No. 1 when No. 4 Auburn defeated the Crimson Tide last minute with its infamous Kick Six, 34-28.
Unlike both the 2007 and 2013 season, though, Alabama is only a little over halfway through its season with time to redeem itself against its remaining opponents.
“We had a lot of motivation to come back and have a great week and prepare for this game, but moving forward it’s going to be even more another level of uncomfortable,” DeBoer said.
