Work on a new roundabout at O Street and 59th Avenue has begun after delays caused by additional coordination with the operators of the nearby railroad.
Road closures began Monday with 59th Avenue closed between F Street and O Street. The intersection will close March 9.
The roundabout is expected to be completed by June 26.
In August 2023, the Weld County commissioners and city of Greeley officials entered into an intergovernmental agreement for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of O Street and 59th Avenue. Under the agreement, the county and city will split the costs evenly, both paying $1,669,565 for construction, though Greeley will be responsible for the roundabout’s construction.
The project will also include milling existing asphalt and applying new asphalt from the intersection to Colo. 392. Additionally, the city will install new water lines and stormwater infrastructure alongside the project.
The new roundabout will improve vehicle safety and traffic flow for this major intersection, and water lines and stormwater utilities ensure the city is future-ready.
Roundabouts can reduce fatal traffic collisions by 90% and collisions that result in injury by 75%, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
