Justin Verlander is Going Back to Where it All Started

Another starting pitcher signing on the eve of Spring Training, and I’d say it’s a particularly fun one.

Justin Verlander is headed back to Detroit:

It’s a relatively modest sum for Verlander, even at his age, when you consider the deferrals. But, hey, with the Tigers spending $60 million on Tarik Skubal and Framber Valdez, I expect Verlander was happy to wait a little longer for his cash in order to be part of a potentially very good Tigers team.

Soon to be 43, Verlander’s overall numbers last year with the Giants were only so-so (his 3.85 ERA and a matching FIP were about 5% better than league average when you account for the friendly ballpark), but he was looking pretty darn good by the end of the year. In the right rotation, where he’s comfortable and can have his innings managed well, it’s not at all hard for me to see him being a valuable back-of-the-rotation arm. Guy just wants to keep on pushing, and I credit it.

I really like the story, too. Even if this isn’t the farewell for Justin Verlander, it’s just nice to see him coming back to the place where he established himself as one of the best pitchers of this generation. That Tigers team, man. They are going to be very good in a division without a whole lot of scare competition.
