University of Alabama senior announces campaign for state House District 16

Christian Martin, a senior majoring in history and theatre, launched his campaign for Alabama’s 16th state House district seat on Jan. 20. If elected, Martin will be the youngest person to serve in Alabama’s House of Representatives.

Martin, who is running as a Democrat, grew up in Northport and attended Tuscaloosa County High School. He said that his history studies, along with his extracurriculars on campus, has helped him prepare for his campaign the most.

District 16 encompasses parts of Tuscaloosa, Jefferson and Fayette counties. Republican Rep. Bryan Brinyark currently holds the seat after a special election was held in 2024.

“I’m a big believer in voters having a choice,” Martin said. “I didn’t want there to be another election where the incumbent state representative goes uncontested.”

Martin says his platform is one for the “everyday Alabamian” and focuses on key issues such as Medicaid expansion, conservation efforts and ending corporate influence on Alabama’s legislation.

“At the end of the day, Christ wants to help the poor,” Martin said. “Faith, hope and charity. The greatest of these is charity.”

He is involved in multiple organizations on campus, including Common Ground, UA New Liberals, and Friends of the Union. Martin also serves as vice president of UA College Democrats and as the community service chair of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu.

“Looking into things like our state’s evolutionary views on things, voting patterns, political history, to know constituents better has been really important to me,” Martin said.

If elected, he will be the first Democrat to win since the district was redrawn in 2012 to cover more of Jefferson County.

Despite this, Martin believes more people will be voting “split ticket” in the next election saying he believes he is the “right kind of Democrat” for the job.

“At the end of the day, I think my platform is going to be the platform that helps the everyday Alabamian,” Martin said.

Elections for the House seat will be held on Nov. 3, 2026.
