IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — The Irondequoit Police Department installed new stop signs on Pardee Road to help reduce speeding in the area.
Neighbors said they liked the new stop signs because they believe they will make it safer for children. The new signs are located on Pardee Road at Candlewood Road and Overbrook Avenue.
“The playground in the summer gets very busy,” Colin Dombek said. “So our first thought was like, this is definitely a safety concern. It is a little bit of a free for all with how Pardee Road is just one big hill.”
Dombek frequently walks his family dog in the area and is expecting his first child.
“We are going to be out more than ever when the weather’s nice and we want to enjoy it safely, just like everybody else.”
Police Chief Peters said residents complained about speeding on Pardee Road. To address this, officers set up cameras to monitor speeds. They found some drivers going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit — and in one instance — 30 miles per hour over.
“There’s a lot of times that when we do put our speed cameras up, we are surprised,” Peters said. “For this one to get speeds over 60 miles an hour, I mean, you’re getting highway speeds on a small side street. So, we thought it was mandatory that we put some speed or stop signs out there.”
Another neighbor expressed excitement about the stop signs, sharing concerns for the children in the area.
“There’s so many children in this area and the school’s down the street,” Wendy Schleyer said. “Why wouldn’t they put something up like this to stop people that don’t want to stop?”
Peters said he was on Pardee Road Wednesday and pulled over two drivers for going through the stop signs, not to issue tickets but to raise awareness. Officers will be on Pardee Road for the next two weeks to remind drivers about the stop signs.
