With the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks just around the corner, some of the most-played bets available for this year’s matchup will be either the Over or Under points. This year, the total is currently sitting at 45.5 points. But where does that rank historically among the Big Game’s highest totals? Well, not all that near the top.
When the New England Patriots met the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 for Super Bowl LI, oddsmakers didn’t just expect a game; they expected a fireworks show. Vegas set the Over/Under at a staggering 57.5 points, officially the highest total in Super Bowl history.
Why was the line so high?
It was a collision of two offensive juggernauts. The Falcons arrived with the league’s top-scoring offense, led by MVP Matt Ryan, while Tom Brady’s Patriots ranked third in points scored. Throw in a fast track at the NRG Stadium dome in Houston, and bettors were practically tripping over themselves to hammer the Over.
Did that Super Bowl live up to the hype?
For three quarters, Under bettors were loving what they saw. Atlanta’s defense suffocated the Patriots, and by the midway point of the third quarter, the score sat at 28–3.
Then, history happened. New England staged a legendary 25-point comeback to force the first-ever overtime in Super Bowl history. A final score of 34–28 pushed the total to 62 points, narrowly clearing the record-breaking bar and rewarding the “Over” bettors in the most dramatic fashion possible.
