Texas high school state qualifier Parker Childs has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Southern Illinois University beginning in the fall of 2027, becoming the first publicized verbal commitment in the university’s class of 2031. He shared the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to Southern Illinois University! I would like to thank Coach Hanson and the entire SIU coaching staff! Go Dawgs!!
A rising senior at Mcneil High School in Austin, Childs has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming team since his freshman year. He also trains year-round with Waterloo Swimming, where he primarily specializes in butterfly, backstroke, and IM.
Childs is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw him drop over three seconds in the 200 fly and 200 back, a second and a half in the 100 fly and 100 back, and about a second in the 400 IM. He set his 100 back (51.84) personal best at the Bob Stallings Aggieland Invitational and his 400 IM (4:01.07) at the ST TXLA 11&O November Unclassified in November, before going on to set his 100 fly (51.55), 200 fly (1:51.25), and 200 back (1:50.41) marks at the SE TNAQ Speedo Southern Premier in March. His 200 IM best (1:53.28) dates back to November 2025; he set a season-best of 1:53.57 in 2025-26.
On the high school scene, Childs qualified and competed at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championships for the first time this February, where he placed 18th in the 200 IM (1:56.44).

Childs’ current best times in the 100 back, 200 fly, and 400 IM would have qualified him for the ‘B’ finals, while his marks in the 200 IM and 200 back would have advanced to the ‘C’ finals. He’s also within reach of the 50.39 needed to earn a second swim in the 100 fly. That’s all with two full seasons of training to go before he even lines up at his first conference meet.
