Given the role’s importance to the organization, I wanted to make sure to really spotlight the Chicago Cubs’ Stan Zielinski Scout of the Year, Alex Lontayo.
Humbled by this to say the least. 14 years as a @cubs and have seen a lot of great scouts and even better men receive this honor. Stan epitomized what it meant to be a Cub and a great scout, so being honored as Scout of the Year with his name on the award means everything to me.… pic.twitter.com/Qv5MejZDWM
Lontayo has been with the Cubs organization for 14 years, and serves as the West Regional Coordinator (a pretty important scouting corridor!).
It’s easy in the current era to lose sight of how valuable scouts can still be to a Major League Baseball organization. Yes, video is more detailed and prolific. Yes, data and analytics are much more robust and predictive. But it’s still the case that the very best human eyes, ears, brains, etc. can make the difference between finding the right fit for your organization and betting on the wrong talent. The difference between getting 90% development out of an amateur, and getting him 100% maxed out. The difference between using all of your bonus pool effectively, and squandering a chunk of it. So on and so forth.
With the Cubs’ farm system having taken a step back the last few years (some for good and understandable reasons (trades and promotions), some for less good (IFA whiffs, lack of surprising breakouts), it’s going to be all the more critical that the Cubs win the scouting race in the draft in 2026 and beyond. There are also league-wide institutional changes coming to use of video and data, so I could see human scouts becoming all the more important. It’s also possible that, in the next CBA, the landscape for the draft (and an international draft?), for player eligibility, and for signing structures will change once again. You can’t be certain of what things will look like next year. But you can be certain that having the best, smartest, most-committed, and kindest scouting talent will probably pay dividends one way or another.
