While Roger Taylor is famous for being Queen's drummer, he's also a talented singer and songwriter (as longtime fans are well aware). In fact, he's made multiple solo records showing off his many musical skills; his last album, Outsider, was released in 2021. Now, five years later, he's back with another brand new song.
Titled "Chumps," the song seemingly joins other new tracks from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Billy Bragg in taking aim at the Trump administration. Though Taylor never explicitly mentions the U.S. president's name, his lyrics say it all: "A man of no morality / Of no real quality / A shallow man / A man devoid of empathy / No trace of sympathy / A callow man."
In his caption on the video, Taylor stated, simply: "Gotta say something."
Commenters were quick to praise the new tune, with one writing, "A man with guts to say it. Our dear Roger."
"Roger will forever remain a legend, like Freddie, Brian, and John," a second person declared, adding, "I would like to send a message to Queen fans: we must keep the band alive so that their name will still be spoken in future generations."
"Another reason Queen's been my favorite for 40+ years. Tell it like it is, Roger!" raved someone else, with yet another fan noting, "All these years and Roger still has such a beautiful and powerful voice."
Brian May also spoke out about the current situation in the U.S.
Taylor's new song comes closely on the heels of Queen bandmate Brian May saying the group likely won't tour in the U.S. again.
“America is a dangerous place at the moment, so you have to take that into account,” May said in a recent interview with the Daily Mail UK. “It’s very sad because I feel like Queen grew up in America, and we love it, but it’s not what it was. Everyone is thinking twice about going there at the moment.”
For his part, Taylor told Rolling Stonein September that Queen likely won't be launching any huge world tours in the future, though the band isn't ready to say "farewell."
“I don’t think we’re done,” Taylor said, adding, “And I don’t think we’re going to say a final farewell tour. Because it never is, is it?”
If fans have their way, it never will be.
