Chicago Bulls shooting guard Coby White has been the name perhaps most frequently bandied about in trade buzz for the club this season. Evan Sidery has reported that Chicago has little appetite for inking White to a new contract when he hits free agency this summer. The Bulls have thus far failed to come to terms with White on an extension, which has driven trade speculation ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA Trade Deadline.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, clearly in need for a ballhandling guard upgrade alongside four-time All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards, have been linked to all three of Chicago’s guards not named Josh Giddey: White, Ayo Dosunmu and Tre Jones.
Another rumor emerged recently that the Detroit Pistons, who could use a bit of 3-point marksmanship help, are also contemplating a move for White.
Now, a new team has emerged as a possible White suitor: the Houston Rockets.
Sidery suggests that Chicago team president Arturas Karnisovas could be open to a deal surrounding a future Houston first-round draft pick (the Rockets have many), plus the contract of a veteran like Dorian Finney-Smith or the injured Steven Adams to match money.

Sporting a 30-17 record, No. 4-seeded Houston does already look like one of the West’s best as-is this season. But the Rockets are clearly missing nominal starting point guard Fred VanVleet, who tore his ACL in September and could miss the season.
Second-year former Houston lottery pick Reed Sheppard has emerged as at least an NBA-caliber player this season, but the 21-year-old Kentucky product is no VanVleet. Not yet, anyway.
Right calf tightness has limited White’s availability to just 28 games so far this season. The 25-year-old has steadied himself of late, after a patchy shooting start from deep. He’s been averaging 18.5 points on .439/.350/.810 shooting splits, 4.8 assists (against 3.0 turnovers), and 3.5 rebounds a night.
The Rockets could use more scoring and distributing in their backcourt.
Finney-Smith inked a four-season, $52.7 million contract in free agency that Houston instantly regretted. He’s now effectively out of head coach Ime Udoka’s rotation after missing the first two months of a season with an injury. Finney-Smith has appeared in just 16 games, averaging 15.4 minutes per. His $12.7 million salary this season aligns nicely with White’s $12.9 million expiring deal.
Adams has been ruled out for the rest of the season following a left ankle surgery last week. He had been a pretty critical frontcourt cog on defense, around the boards and when it comes to setting hard picks.
The 32-year-old big man’s $14.1 million contract for 2025-26 also would be fairly easy to exchange with White’s. An aging Clint Capela, re-signed this past summer as Adams insurance, will slot in well as his replacement.
Led by frontcourt All-Stars Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun (the latter of whom was shockingly omitted from this year’s crop of NBA All-Star reserves), Houston has size, length, and the kind of defensive intensity and switchability that could give West favorites like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets fits in the postseason.
But the Rockets need a little more backcourt help, assuming VanVleet doesn’t recover in time. White isn’t as much of a deferential set-up man as a prime VanVleet could be, but he’s also younger, still has upside as a passer, and has established himself as a solid three-level scorer.
Houston has a real shot at a deep playoff run this spring and summer. Durant is 37, and there’s no guarantee he’ll continue to perform at this level next year. The Rockets possess the draft capital necessary to add a talented guard. Coby White fits the bill.
