Even fans who are relatively unfamiliar with FCS football have to admit the level has produced a Who’s Who list of Super Bowl MVP recipients.
To say former FCS football players have had wide-ranging impact on the Super Bowl is an understatement.
The Division I split in 1978 that created separate FCS and FBS levels came along 12 seasons after the first Super Bowl, but already, six former players from the subdivision have earned the Most Valuable Player award in football’s biggest game.
The half-dozen Super Bowl MVPs span FCS geography as their college careers were played in the following areas:
FCS independent (Richard Dent, Tennessee State) Ohio Valley Conference (Phil Simms, Morehead State) Southwestern Athletic Conference (Jerry Rice, Mississippi Valley State) Gateway Conference (Kurt Warner, Northern Iowa) CAA Football (Joe Flacco, Delaware) Big Sky Conference (Cooper Kupp, Eastern Washington)Following is how the FCS players earned Super Bowl MVP.

1 year ago Craig HaleyRichard Dent, DE, Chicago Bears (Tennessee State)
Super Bowl 20: Bears 46, New England Patriots 10 (Jan. 26, 1986)
In the “Super Bowl Shuffle” Bears’ biggest game, no player had better moves than Dent. As he became the first former FCS player to earn Super Bowl MVP, he racked up five tackles (three solos) with 1.5 sacks for 12 yards in losses, forced two fumbles that were recovered by teammates, and blocked a pass. At the time, it was the largest winning margin in the game’s history.
Phil Simms, QB, New York Giants (Morehead State)
Super Bowl 21: Giants 39, Denver Broncos 20 (Jan. 25, 1987)
Simms, who in 1979 became the first FCS player to be selected in the NFL Draft, still holds Super Bowl single-game records for completion% (88.0) and passer rating (150.9), having gone 22 of 25 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. He’s credited for being the first MVP to use the post-Super Bowl phrase, “I’m going to Disney World!”
Jerry Rice, WR, San Francisco 49ers (MVSU)
Super Bowl 23: 49ers 20, Cincinnati Bengals 16 (Jan. 22, 1989)
One of football’s greatest players had a TD reception in all four of his Super Bowl appearances, but this was the Mississippi Valley State alum’s MVP performance as he had 11 catches for 215 yards – which is still the game’s individual record – and a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. On the 49ers’ 11-play, 92-yard game-winning drive – capped by FCS alum John Taylor (Delaware State) with a last-minute TD reception – Rice caught three passes for 51 yards.
Kurt Warner, QB, St. Louis Rams (Northern Iowa)
Super Bowl 34: Rams 23, Tennessee Titans 16 (Jan. 30, 2000)
Warner passed for 414 yards, a Super Bowl record that stood for 27 years. His final pass was downfield to Isaac Bruce for a 73-yard touchdown with just under two minutes remaining, breaking a 16-16 tie. Warner also threw a TD pass to Torry Holt midway through the third quarter as part of his 24-for-45 performance.
Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore Ravens (Delaware)
Super Bowl 47: Ravens 34, San Francisco 49ers 31 (Feb. 3, 2013)
The Ravens built a 21-3 lead on Flacco’s three touchdown passes, then held on for the win in a Super Bowl that included a 34-minute, partial power outage at the Mercedes Superdome. Included was a 56-yarder to Jacoby Jones as Flacco went 22 of 33 yards. He followed Joe Montana (1988 season playoffs) as the second NFL quarterback to reach double figures in TD passes in a single postseason without throwing an interception (11 to 0).
Cooper Kupp, WR, Los Angeles Rams (E. Washington)
Super Bowl 56: Rams 23, Cincinnati Bengals 20 (Feb. 13, 2022)
Kupp caught two touchdowns, including a 1-yard game-winner with 1:25 left while capping a dominating season in which he also secured the NFL’s receiving Triple Crown and earned AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year. Overall, the FCS leader in numerous receiving records and the 2015 Walter Payton Award recipient had eight receptions for 92 yards.
