Broccoli didn't think the track was suitable, and Saltzman felt the lyrics were too suggestive towards a man's genitalia. Black was told to rework the lyrics, but they ultimately didn't, as Broccoli approved the track and it was kept in the film.
Some details behind the song claim that Barry told Bassey to disregard the fact that the track is about diamonds. He told her to imagine she was singing to male genitalia, and amid some giggles, Bassey delivered one of her most powerful performances.
“He never said that to me when I was writing it. I was writing about a diamond!" explained Black in a 2008 interview with the Sunday Times.
While "Diamonds Are Forever" didn't receive the same chart status as "Goldfinger," it's often regarded as one of the defining songs of the James Bond franchise. It also became known as one of Bassey's signature tracks, as she would return to the spy franchise to sing the theme for Moonraker in 1979.
