Happy Senior Bowl Day! Players to Watch, Bears History in Mobile, and Other Saturday Bullets

Day 13 of the Chicago Bears offseason. I haven’t slept well in about a week. The bad news is that it is starting to catch up with me. But the good news is that I have a plan in place to get a good night’s sleep tonight. Hopefully, nothing throws me off or sidetracks my plans. Keep your fingers crossed.

Happy Senior Bowl Day! Patrick has a Senior Bowl primer full of names Bears fans should get to know at a variety of positions including edge rushers, interior defensive linemen, linebackers, and offensive linemen. Give it a read. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. CT on NFL Network.

A word to the wise: Do not overlook the Senior Bowl’s importance. Since Ryan Poles took over as the Bears’ general manager in 2022, he has drafted three Senior Bowl participants (left tackle Braxton Jones, right tackle Darnell Wright, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson) who became multi-year starters. Austin Booker, a 2024 Senior Bowl standout, could join the aforementioned group of starters next season. Maybe offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo (2025) can join that group, too. Other Bears who came through the college football all-star showcase include punter Tory Taylor, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, running back Roschon Johnson, offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie, and defensive lineman Zacch Pickens. As you can tell by the list, not all lottery tickets are going to be winners. But you can’t win if you don’t play, so keep spinning the wheel. Tyson Bagent runs vs. the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images Over at Pro Football Focus, Jordan Plocher has a handful of players to keep tabs on when the Senior Bowl kicks off on Saturday afternoon. My favorite prospects in this collection are a pair of players who could be Bears fits in the trenches. Firstly, Western Michigan edge rusher Nadame Tucker could be a Day 2 prospect fit after posting 14 sacks, six quarterback hits, and 41 hurries while posting a 93.3 PFF pass rush grade in 316 pass-rushing snaps. Tucker checks in at No. 151 on PFF’s big board, which puts him in the range where someone could get a surprise steal. The other intriguing prospect fit for the Bears from the aforementioned PFF post is offensive tackle Trey Zuhn III. The Texas A&M prospect checks some boxes for me by being a four-year starter with ample experience at left tackle in the SEC while also displaying some positional versatility. The arm length (32 7/8-inches) might scare some folks off, but keep in mind that Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson isn’t necessarily spooked by such things. Plocher believes Zuhn could have “a Grey Zabel-type rise” in the pre-draft process. Stay tuned. One NFL insider believes there is one Senior Bowl prospect who could “fit the prototype” of what Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen wants out of an edge rusher. So let’s keep an eye on Clemson’s T.J. Parker, who ESPN’s Jordan Reid describes as “a power rusher who is also an NFL-ready run defender.” Reid also name-checks Penn State’s Dani Dennis-Sutton and Illinois’ Gabe Jacas as possible Day 2 options for Chicago’s football team. Mandatory Credit: Ron Johnson-Imagn Images Safety is a not-so-sneaky need for the Bears, who have All-Pro Kevin Byard, four-year starter Jaquan Brisker, key reserve Jonathan Owens, and 2022 Day 3 draft pick Elijah Hicks on the cusp of free agency. So reading about TCU safety Bud Clark in Daniel Jeremiah’s roundup of top-10 standouts from Senior Bowl practices caught my attention. This is what Jeremiah had to say about the two-time second-team All-Big 12 defensive back:

Folks, a bona-fide ball magnet made his way to Mobile this year. Clark’s one-handed interception on pass intended for N.C. State TE Justin Joly was one of the highlights of the week. I knew his production was outstanding at TCU (15 INTs in the last four seasons) and he was the same type of player in practice. Clark’s stock is rising as a likely Day 2 pick.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid on North Carolina cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, who could be a Day 3 target and is someone who could make sense for a Bears team that could use some cornerback depth: “With one-on-one red zone drills being the emphasis for the National team on Thursday, Dixon started off strong with multiple pass breakups. Showing his change-of-direction skills, he was able to remain sticky in coverage and his poise continued throughout each rep. His best play came in 11-on-11, when he made a quick break downhill for an interception. He was the best corner on the field. Dixon has received mostly early-mid Day 3 grades, and he has a chance to enter the Round 4 discussion.” The Athletic’s Dane Brugler piece on Senior Bowl week’s biggest winners has this one-liner about running backs that caught my eye: “Arkansas’ Mike Washington Jr. and Indiana’s Kaelon Black also did a nice job blocking and catching the football.” It is only a gut feeling, but I feel like the Bears are more likely to draft a running back to add to their mix than they are to spend big in free agency. With that in mind, I envision the powers that be at Halas Hall will try to unearth a running back who is well-rounded enough to contribute as a multi-down back because of their blocking and pass-catching ability. We’re getting to a place where we probably need to re-think how we talk about running backs. On the one hand, I feel like the days of classifying backs as three-down or two-down guys are soon to be over. And on the other hand, I see the NFL’s best teams creating backfield rotations and tandems featuring backs who could be on the field for any down and distance because of the well-rounded nature of their games. We’ll see how this position group continues to evolve. A fun read from CBS Sports writer Ryan Wilson, who gets insights from some of the top Senior Bowl prospects who provide a look at their games with a different perspective.
