Students take on Fresh Food Co. in ‘Chopped’ style competition

Alabama students donned their aprons and took over the Fresh Food Company in the first ever Bama Dining: “Chopped” cooking competition on Wednesday. Inspired by the show of the same name, this competition takes place over four nights. Two chefs and one team of students will advance to the final round.

Student Night pitted two teams against each other, team “Grease Fire” and team “Big Back Ballers.” The teams were presented upon arrival with baskets of mystery ingredients and had to use all of them to create a delicious meal. The theme for student night was “Budget Gourmet,” and the mystery ingredients consisted of ground turkey, frozen vegetables, pre-cooked white rice and applesauce.

With the television show, it’s common for one of the ingredients to be difficult to incorporate. In this competition, it was the applesauce. It posed a challenge to both teams, being sweet compared to all of the savory items.

“What I was definitely afraid of first was the applesauce,” said Caleb Hunnicutt, a freshman nursing student on team Big Back Ballers. “We ended up playing into it, and we ended up making a really, really good apple glazed roux to kind of top it off.”

The other team also had fun with the ingredients. Jonah Beale, a freshman double majoring in finance and real estate and a member of team Grease Fire,  said the team took a different spin on the applesauce.

“We made a Japanese inspired spicy-sweet sauce with the applesauce as the base,” Beale said.. “The sauce was very hard, we were just pouring different ingredients into it, and I think we perfected it.”

Both teams created fried rice based dishes, although they differed in their presentation. Team Grease Fire served apple-chili glazed turkey fried rice, and team Big Back Ballers titled their dish “Dirty Thanksgiving.”

“I came up with the idea for fried rice because I make fried rice every week, and my mom’s Japanese,” said Issac Bean, a junior double majoring in business and finance. Bean competed on team Big Back Ballers, and he even brought his own wok to the competition.

Once the teams completed their dishes, they served them to students at Fresh Food Company so that they could vote for the dish that they liked the best.

Team Grease Fire won Student Night and will advance to the final round against the winner of Men’s Night and Ladies’ Night on Feb. 2.
